Conroe Courier/ April 8, 2020/ Fishing Reports, News

The fishing on Lake Conroe is good. The water temperature in the morning has been 62 degrees about daylight at the dam and warms up with the sunshine. The level of the lake is 200.47 feet above mean sea level, and no water is being released. The pool is 201 feet above mean sea level.

Black bass fishing is good with many being caught in the shallows. Fishing guide Butch Terpe said that he fished the shallows for a couple hours recently and caught 12 bass, and seven of them were keepers with one over five pounds. Texas rigged soft plastics in Watermelon colors and crankbaits in shad patterns are good starting places. Spinnerbaits and light colored lizards in the shallows will produce some positive results also. The bass spawn in waves so they can still be caught on humps, points, and other structure down to about 18 feet.

Catfish are still good. They can be found on baited holes along the humps and points in 18-20 feet of water. Terpe said he had a party out recently and they caught limits of 25 catfish each in about three hours. He said you can also catch some under corks around bulkheads on live shad from daylight until about 9 a.m., then the bite drops off.

Crappie are good on the brush piles and bridge pylons. Terpe said he had a party of two men out recently that caught their limit of crappie all in the 12-inch range. They caught them on jigs and fished 10 brush piles to get the limits.

Hybrids are after the shad and a couple were reported caught on shad deep on the FM 1097 bridge pylons.

White bass are showing up and Terpe said he has caught 1½- to two-pound white bass on humps and points jigging ¾-ounce slab spoon in 22 feet of water.

Bream are down on the deep brush with the crappie biting on minnows. Meal worms or night crawlers are also good bait. Some are also being caught from the banks.
