Conroe Courier/ January 22, 2020/ Fishing Reports, News

The fishing on Lake Conroe is fair to good around the cold fronts. The water temperature this morning has been 52 degrees about daylight at the dam. The level of the lake is 199.06 feet above mean sea level and no water is being released. Pool is 201 feet above mean sea level.

Black bass fishing is fair to good. Fishing guide Butch Terpe said that fishing around the rocks, riprap, and docks is producing some good results. Texas rigged soft plastics in Watermelon colors and crankbaits in shad patterns are working well. Spinnerbaits in the shallows may produce some good bass early in the morning.

Catfish are still good. They can be found on baited holes along the humps and points in 15-20 feet of water. Terpe said he had a party out recently and they caught limits of 25 catfish each in three hours. Terpe used punch bait on sponge hooks but chicken liver will also work well. He said he also caught some nice catfish on the brush using minnows while crappie fishing.

Crappie are biting on the brush and other structure like the FN 1097 and FM 1375 bridge pylons. Minnows are the best bait at this time although jigs will work in experienced hands. Crappie in the size range of 12-13 inches is common at this time and Terpe said in the parties he out recently they brought in 13 keeper crappie a trip. Two to four were taken from a location then you have to move to another brush pile.

Hybrids seem to be scattered once again and the the bite is slow. Hybrids (Palmetto Bass) cannot reproduce and according to the TPWD on line stocking records none have been stocked since 2016, so the population must be declining. You might try trolling No. 13 Pet Spoons behind deep running crankbaits or jigging slab spoon or live shad.

Bream are down deep with the colder water. Meal worms or night crawlers are the best bait.
